The Monarch

Here is a picture of The Monarch's costume. When I get pictures of the rest, I will post them as well. But, since I felt particularly proud of the Monarch's costume, I actually took a photo before we were all assembled together. Obviously, he does not have his insane eyebrows or beard in this shot. You can see them later.

As for the construction: His costume is made mainly of fleece with quilt batting to give it form. The wings are a mixture of black fleece and orange broadcloth over quilt batting, the vest is just fleece over batting, and his boots are just fleece (they wrap over his sneakers). The wristbands are fleece over 1/2 inch upholstery foam, as are his shoulder pads. The skullcap was sewn of sporty/stretchy material and the ears were sewn on and stuffed with fluff. His crown is just craft foam that he wears like a party hat.
I did not make the body suit, that was purchased in two pieces from the local Wal-Mart.

Edit (9/13/10):
I'm flattered by all the requests, but I don't own the costume anymore, I don't have the time to make another, and I don't have any patterns to offer. Although, if you'd like any tips or an explanation of the construction of any one piece I can answer those questions. Thanks for looking!

Good luck with the sewing. My main pointer is to use cheap material (I used lots of fleece) and to make several practice pieces to check on the fit. Have fun!

you said you got the bodysuit, and hood, at walmart? Any help on finding that? I came up empty on my last trip. Also, great wings! hints?

Actually, I got the bodysuit from Walmart. It isn't actually a bodysuit but a top and bottom made of spandex. When you wear them both, they look like a full bodysuit. You can find them in the men's sports department. The hood I made out of an elastic material, but you can find a similar one from any sports store (I based my pattern off of one found at REI).

Can I buy this from you?

Sorry, but I no longer own the costume (my friend kept it). Best I can do is offer sewing advice.

Any chance to get patterns from you maybe?

I'm sorry, but I don't have anything remaining from my creation of the costume.

What Loft batting did you use? as someone who hasnt touched a sewing machine in about 5 years my knowledge on the subject is lacking but i promised my girlfriend i would make this costume.

I used one of those pre-sized packages of quilt batting. Not the thinnest batting available, but pretty close. And I basted the batting to both sides of the fabric, so the thickness ended up being double.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
